Portsmouth Water - Google Earth 3-D tile quality by site
Photorealistic-tile coverage across the 24 Portsmouth Water twin sites · generated 28 Jul 2026
These are the 24 Portsmouth Water sites recently added to the Critec Digital Twin. Each is a one-time local bake of Google Photorealistic 3-D Tiles. This report grades how good Google's imagery actually is at each location, from super-high-definition photogrammetry down to flat, draped aerial imagery with no real 3-D structure.
How the tiles were captured: each site's baked tileset was rendered in isolation (away from the twin UI) using the same 3d-tiles-renderer + reorientation the twin uses, on this host's real GPU (AMD Radeon 680M), framed to an oblique aerial view and left to fully stream in before the shot.
Key point about LOD: every baked site reaches Google's finest tile level - a geometric error of ~2.0 m everywhere (measured across every tileset). So the LOD floor is uniform; what actually varies is how much real 3-D detail Google captured there. Towns and large works get rich photogrammetry; open farmland gets only a flat image draped on the ground. That difference is what the grades below measure.
Quality spans the full range across this estate: a town-centre pumping station reaches full High-LOD photogrammetry, most villages and works sit in the middle, and several rural boosters and boreholes are on open farmland that Google only covers as flat, near-featureless imagery.
Distribution
■ High LOD: 1■ Good: 5■ Medium: 11■ Low: 4■ Flat / minimal: 3
High LODDense, crisp photogrammetry - buildings, tanks, vehicles and roofs are sharply 3-D. Google's best coverage.
GoodSolid photogrammetry; structures clearly 3-D, textures a touch softer than the best sites.
MediumMixed - structures recognisable but softer, with large areas of flat open ground (pasture / fields).
LowMostly soft / near-flat; buildings indistinct, dominated by fields and woodland with little clear 3-D.
Flat / minimalNear-featureless aerial imagery draped on flat ground - open farmland with no real 3-D structure. The 'none / flat' end.
All sites, ranked
Best tile quality first. "Tiles" = number / size of baked .glb mesh tiles; "finest" = smallest geometric error in the tileset; "across" = rendered site extent.
